Celebrating 50 Years of Pride, Inclusivity, and Community: Bet Mishpachah’s Golden Anniversary
This year, Bet Mishpachah, Washington, D.C.'s LGBTQ+ synagogue, proudly celebrates 50 years of inclusivity, vibrant community, and unwavering commitment to equality and justice. Since our founding in 1975, we have been a beacon of love, acceptance, and spiritual connection for LGBTQ+ Jews and allies in our nation's capital and beyond.
Our Story: A Journey of Inclusion and Empowerment
Bet Mishpachah was born out of a need for a safe space where LGBTQ+ individuals could come together, practice Judaism, and embrace our identities. Founded by a small group of visionaries, we quickly grew into a diverse and thriving community that has supported hundreds of individuals and families over the years. As we reflect on our history, we honor the resilience of those who came before us, as well as the countless volunteers, leaders, and supporters who have made Bet Mishpachah a place of warmth and welcome.
From the early days of meeting in living rooms and small venues, to our current home in the heart of D.C., Bet Mishpachah has remained steadfast in its mission to offer a spiritual home for all who seek it. Throughout these five decades, we have witnessed profound shifts in both Jewish life and LGBTQ+ rights, and we are proud to have played a role in advancing both.
A Legacy of Pride and Spirituality
As an LGBTQ+ synagogue, our mission has always been to create a space where Jewish traditions are respected and celebrated, while embracing the diversity of our LGBTQ+ community. Through innovative prayer services, vibrant cultural events, and social justice initiatives, Bet Mishpachah has become a symbol of what it means to live authentically in both faith and identity.
Our services are marked by a spirit of inclusion and empowerment, where each person is encouraged to bring their whole selves into our sacred space. Whether it’s through our Shabbat services, Torah study, holiday celebrations, or community programs, we continue to foster an environment where all feel welcome to celebrate their Jewish identity and LGBTQ+ pride.
Celebrating Our Past, Present, and Future
As we mark 50 years of service, we look back with gratitude on the milestones we’ve reached, the lives we’ve touched, and the journeys we’ve shared together. But the celebration doesn't stop there. Our work continues, and we are excited about the future of Bet Mishpachah and the broader LGBTQ+ Jewish community.
