Bet Mishpachah's most mirthful service of the year will take place in the 16th Street Lobby..
The twisted ma’ariv service will be co-led by Pinchas the Purim Penguin and Jedi Master Alex Carter. The festivities continue with a Megilla reading, as we cheer enthusiastically for our heroine Esther and zestfully drown out he-who-shall-not-be-named. There will be silliness, hamantashen, and adult beverages. Come in costume, come as you are, or come as you wish to be!
One of the mitzvot associated with Purim is matanot l’evyonim—donations to the needy. To fulfill this mitzvah, each year Bet Mishpachah collects donations to the Queen Esther Fund prior to and at Purim services and chooses one organization to receive the fund for that year. This year that organization is HIAS.
HIAS, formerly known as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, is the only Jewish organization whose mission is to assist refugees throughout the world, wherever they are and whatever their faith and ethnicity. Headquartered in Silver Spring, Md., HIAS helps refugees escape persecution and resettle in safety, reunites families that have been separated, and helps refugees build new lives in safety and freedom. In the United States, HIAS works with local social service organizations around the country to welcome refugees and help them integrate into their communities. HIAS also facilitates the application process for refugees to resettle in other countries. Finally, HIAS advocates in the United States and internationally for laws that protect the human rights of all refugees, wherever they are.
