Don’t miss the Adult Story-telling Brunch, May 20, 11:30 – 1:30, at the DCJCC sponsored by the Bet Mishpachah education committee.

Our storyteller, Bob Rovinsky, has been telling stories for more than 25 years. He is a founding member of the “Voices in the Glen” Storytelling guild (www.voicesintheglen.org) who provides storytelling to groups and events throughout the Washington DC area.

Bob has merged his passion for storytelling with his interest in folk dancing and modern dance and studied under Liz Lerman, an internationally known choreographer and director of a professional company of dancers in Washington, D.C. He has performed at synagogues, birthday parties, and other events. His repertoire includes stories from all over the world, and span folk tales, true stories, wisdom tales and stories with a moral point.

May 20th, Bob will weave information about the importance of storytelling in Jewish tradition and what makes a story "Jewish" into stories from different religious, cultural and ethnic origins. He will also focus on our value for this year and share stories about compassion.

Shavuot is one of the three harvest festivals in the Jewish calendar of holidays. Shavuot is also associated with the anniversary of receiving the Torah at Mount Sinai. There are traditions that have developed around all our holidays. Two traditions associated with Shavuot are eating dairy and a Tikkun L’eil Shavuot, an all night study session on the first evening of the holiday. There are many explanations about why a dairy meal on Shavuot. I will share one with you. A sage discovered that the initials of the four Hebrew words in Numbers 28:26 describing the sacrificial meal offering for Shavuot offering spell out the Hebrew (mei halav) from milk, suggesting that dairy food is the acceptable dinner for the holiday. At Sinai, the Israelittes were considered as innocent as newborns, whose food is milk.

The all night study session is a result of our sages teaching that the Israelites had fallen asleep and had to be woken by G-d in order to witness the revelation at Sinai. The custom of learning all night shows our eagerness to accept the laws of the Torah, the giving of which is associated with Shavuot.

We live in a modern world and the revelation at Sinai did not have to compete with the Memorial Day Weekend. For a taste of the study sessions, our regular Saturday morning service and luncheon will be extended a bit to allow for a study session during the usual Kiddush luncheon following services. For those still in town over the weekend, there will be an atcbm with information about some of the Tikkun L’eil Shavuot going on in the metropolitan DC area.

As Memorial Day 2012 approaches, the National Museum of American Jewish Military History and the Jewish War Veterans lists at present over 45 Jews who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their countryundefinedfor usundefinedin Iraq and Afghanistan since 2003.

There are no other organizations better suited to remember these Fallen Heroes than JWV, the nation’s oldest active veterans’ service organization, and NMAJMH, established to document and preserve the contributions of Jewish Americans to the peace and freedom of the United States and educate the public concerning the courage, heroism and sacrifices made by Jewish Americans who have served in the armed forces,

This list is an accounting of those who have given their lives in our current conflicts to date. I’m sure you will be struck by how young so many of them were, how much life they had ahead of them, how much talent the world has lost with their passing.

This Memorial Day weekend remember their lives and their sacrifice by reading their names at your echelon’s meeting closest to Memorial Day, asking your Rabbi and other Jewish community leaders in your area to read the names at services on the Shabbat of Memorial Day weekend, and including the reading of the names at all Memorial Day events.

May their names and their memories be a blessing to us all.

Share your pride and your faith at this year's Pride Week Interfaith Service on Tuesday, June 5 at 7:30 PM. It will be at Luther Place Memorial Church (where we have HHD services - 1226 Vermont Avenue NW) and feature Dr. Dana Beyer as the guest speaker and the Rock Creek Singers of the Gay Mens Chorus Washington. The coming of Shabbat on Friday night is always a celebration. When Pride Week coincides with Shabbat, the service on Friday night could be an extravaganza. Join your Bet Mishpachah family on Friday night June 8, in the Community Hall of the DCJCC for our annual Pride Erev Shabbat Service. Celebrate loud and proud with us. If Friday nights don’t work for you or you want a double dose of Shabbat and Pride, don’t forget to mark your calendar for our Pride Saturday morning service. Sat. June 9 also in the Community Hall at the DCJCC. A festive Oneg follows the Friday night Pride Shabbat service and a joyous Kiddush luncheon is after the Saturday morning Pride service.
